Robert Fuchs – a Swiss gentleman – was the founder and sponsor of the Hydroelectric Power station in Chipole area on the Ruvuma river. The Lupilo hydroelectric power station was built in 2005. Since 2006 it has been producing electric power for the convent in Chipole. The power station is operated by Sisters from the Convent. The Robert Fuchs foundation still supports the Sisters with maintenance work.
The around 400 kW capacity generator is situated at around 9 km south west of the main Chipole site.
The power station was destroyed by flooding in 2021. Repair work is currently ongoing under the supervision of Benedictine Sisters. We hope that the power station will be able to operate again in 2023/2024.
